The Zamfara State Government has released about N1 billion for the payment of pension arrears to local and state government pensioners.
This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Gusau and signed by Muhammad Tukur, the Chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners.
The statement said the money was part of more than N2.6 billion the state government owed pensioners.
It said that of the N2.6 billion debt, the 14 local government areas in the state were owing their pensioners about N1.7 billion and the state government was owing its pensioners N700 million.
The statement recalled that last year the state government paid about N450 million arrears to its pensioners.
It appealed to the state government to increase the current minimum pension rate of N4,600 in view of the rising cost of living so that the senior citizens of the state could live a better life.
“Since the state government is considering paying N18,000 as minimum wage to its workers, pensioners deserved a corresponding increase in their pensions,” Mr. Tukur said.
