The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 11, Osogbo, Ebikeme Orubebe, has pleaded with Nigerians not to write-off the Nigeria police inspite of some inadequacies associated with the law enforcement agency.
He made the plea on Thursday at Orile-Igbon in Oyo State where he inaugurated and took over two buildings housing the Divisional Police Station and Divisional Police Officer’s Quarters.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the buildings were donated by Oba Samuel Osungbade, the Olugbon of Orile Igbon.
Mr. Orubebe said that though the Nigeria Police had its shortcomings, Nigerians should support the Federal Government to improve the image of the Force.
“Before the society would give anybody a name, they must have studied the person over a period of time.
“They have watched us before giving us a bad name.
“However, my appeal to the public is that they should not ignore and despise us because we still remain the only alternative in the protection of lives and property.
“We are disliked for exposing the ills in the society, but you should love us for providing security,” he said.
The AIG also urged the rank and file of the Force to rise up to the challenge of improving the image of the Force.
“The people look up to us for a number of things and we cannot continue to fail. We must rise up to meet their expectations,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to Mr. Osungbade for donating the buildings to the Nigeria police, saying he was not surprised at the gesture.
“I have known the king since 1995 when he freely accommodated me in his hotel for nine months when I was newly posted to this town as DPO,’’ he said.
In his address, Mr. Osungbade said that the donation was borne out of the need to ensure adequate provision of facilities to enhance security of lives and property.
“The police anywhere in the world are the first to look up to in securing lives and properties.
“Since I cannot do their work, I believe that with adequate tools, they will perform to expectation. This is my belief and hence my motivation,” he said.
