Afrinvest’s senior leadership team on a courtesy visit to Mr Elumelu

Afrinvest’s senior leadership team on a courtesy visit to Mr Elumelu

Afrinvest repays undocumented $1 million from Elumelu with interest

Tony Elumelu says Afrinvest’s repayment of an undocumented $1 million investment made after the 2008 financial crisis has reinforced his belief that trust, when honoured, can unlock business growth and encourage more Africans to invest in promising entrepreneurs.

Nigerian billionaire investor Tony Elumelu has revealed that he transferred $1 million to Afrinvest West Africa without a written agreement or specified repayment terms after the 2008 global financial crisis, relying solely on his confidence in the company’s leadership.

Mr Elumelu, chairman of Heirs Holdings, said the investment had recently been repaid with interest, more than a decade after he extended the financial support to the investment firm during a difficult period.

In a post published on his verified Facebook page on Thursday, Mr Elumelu said he made the unsolicited investment because he believed in the leadership and resilience of Ike Chioke, Afrinvest’s group managing director, and his partners.

He said he requested the company’s account number, transferred the money and told its leadership to repay it when business conditions improved.

“There was no documentation, no agreements, no terms,” Mr Elumelu said, describing the arrangement as an act of confidence in the company’s ability to overcome its difficulties.

Mr Chioke subsequently led members of Afrinvest’s senior leadership team on a courtesy visit to Mr Elumelu to express appreciation for the support.

Mr Elumelu said the repayment represented more than recovering his capital and the interest earned on it. He said it showed that the company had honoured the trust placed in its leadership, reinforcing his willingness to support other promising businesses.

“The act of repaying trust, not just capital, is inspiring and encouraging,” he said.

Mr Elumelu said he hoped the experience would encourage financially successful Africans to invest in people and businesses with potential, particularly when they face difficult circumstances.

He warned that beneficiaries who betray investors’ confidence risk discouraging them from extending similar support to others.

Afrinvest’s growth

Mr Elumelu said Afrinvest has grown into a financial services institution that employs more than 200 people and operates six subsidiaries, creating jobs and business opportunities.

Founded in 1995 as Securities Transaction and Trust Company Limited, Afrinvest has grown into a capital market holding company offering services including investment banking, securities trading, asset management, trusteeship, research and consulting, and financial technology.

Its current group managing director, Mr Chioke, has led the firm through years of development in Nigeria’s financial services sector.

Mr Elumelu said the company’s growth shows how timely support for a business can generate economic opportunities beyond the initial investment.

He linked the experience to his advocacy for what he calls “democratising luck”, a principle centred on extending opportunities to people who can succeed but lack access to the support needed to realise their potential.

Mr Elumelu said his own journey had been shaped by people who believed in him and opened doors when he needed them, creating a responsibility to do the same for others.

“Sometimes, all it takes is one person willing to believe in you, particularly when the odds seem stacked against you,” he said.

Lesson in investor confidence

The disclosure comes amid persistent challenges in financing businesses and expanding access to capital in Africa, where entrepreneurs often need financial backing to sustain operations and scale their ventures.

Afrinvest’s history shows how confidence in business leadership can help an institution endure difficult periods. The company’s official website describes it as a capital market holding company with operations across several financial services.

The company has also demonstrated its commitment to meeting financial obligations. In July 2025, Afrinvest announced the redemption of two series of commercial paper worth a combined N12.19 billion, proving its commitment to investors.

Mr Elumelu did not disclose the interest rate, the total amount repaid in dollars or the precise date on which the original investment was made.

He congratulated Mr Chioke and the Afrinvest team on their achievements, saying the repayment strengthened his conviction that good-faith financial support could produce lasting value.

He expressed hope that more wealthy Africans would support promising individuals and businesses, arguing that such investments could help build a continent where prosperity is more widely shared rather than concentrated among a privileged few.
