Renaissance Capital Africa has raised its valuation of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE by 33.4 per cent to ₦700.41 per share from its initial public offering (IPO) price of ₦525 per share.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the investment bank said the upward revision reflects the refinery’s strong earnings performance in the first nine months of 2026.

“Revenue, EBITDA and net profit all exceeded the firm’s expectations during the period,” the statement said.

In its 16 October update, titled “Stronger Refining Margins Drive Earnings Outperformance,” Renaissance Capital Africa identified robust refining margins and stronger operating results as the main drivers of the revised valuation.

The improved valuation comes amid growing investor interest in the refinery, following its recent strong operational and financial performance.

Last week, PREMIUM TIMES reported that the refinery recorded a net profit of $4.7 billion in the first nine months of 2026, compared with a net loss of $117.2 million in the corresponding period of 2025, according to its latest unaudited results.

“Revenue grew by 144 per cent from $9.2 billion, while EBITDA increased nearly nine-fold to $5.5 billion from $627.6 million. Operating cash flow rose more than ten-fold to $3.68 billion, underscoring the refinery’s growing ability to generate substantial earnings and cash flow from its operations,” the statement said.

In the nine months to September, the refinery strengthened its balance sheet, moving from a net debt position of $1.73 billion as of September 2025 to a net cash position of $651 million.

According to Renaissance Capital Africa, the shift reflects improved liquidity and greater financial resilience.

Analysts question valuation

The revised valuation diverges from the view of some analysts who consider the ongoing share price of ₦525 per share expensive, given the uncertainties surrounding the refinery’s expansion plans and the sustainability of its current refining margins.

Reacting to Renaissance Capital Africa’s valuation, Razaq Fatai, director of research and advisory at consultancy firm Vestance, described the refinery’s financial performance as a significant turnaround but warned that the higher valuation could create unrealistic expectations among retail investors.

“Recording a profit in H1 2026 after a loss in 2025 is no small achievement. But a valuation that lands well above the ₦525 offer price risks giving retail investors false hope. It reads as a margin of safety when it is mostly a bet on outcomes that have not happened yet,” he said.

Mr Fatai questioned the assumptions behind the valuation, particularly the refinery’s planned capacity expansion.

He said much of the projection depends on the refinery doubling its capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029, a project estimated to cost about $14 billion.

According to him, the expansion could face significant challenges, including crude supply constraints, foreign exchange pressures, financing costs, and delays often associated with large-scale industrial projects.

“In a DCF, every year of delay erodes value, and Rencap’s own team acknowledges that expansion timing affects the valuation. Treating Phase 2 as near-certain moves future capacity into today’s price,” he said.

A discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation estimates a company’s worth by projecting its future cash flows and discounting them to their present value.

Mr Fatai also expressed reservations about the sustainability of the refinery’s current margins, arguing that the disruption associated with the US war against Iran had created unusually favourable conditions for the sale of jet fuel and diesel in markets facing supply shortages.

He noted that Renaissance Capital Africa expects the refinery’s gross refining margins to rise to $27.50 per barrel in 2026, from $24 per barrel in the first half of the year.

“These are crisis-level crack spreads, not a steady state,” he said, warning that margins could decline if the conflict de-escalates and global refining output normalises.

Mr Fatai added that the same geopolitical tensions supporting higher product margins could also increase crude procurement and shipping costs while exposing the refinery to greater supply risks.

“If a temporary windfall is extrapolated into terminal value, future cash flows will be overstated,” he said.

Mr Fatai also urged investors to consider the potential limitations of the research reports produced by the firms involved in the share offer.

He noted that Renaissance Capital, Chapel Hill Denham and CardinalStone are joint issuing houses for the offer, arguing that investors should compare their assessments with independent valuations.

He cited an assessment by GTI Capital, which reportedly puts the refinery’s fair value at about ₦493 per share and describes the offer price as fully valued.

Mr Fatai said the refinery could be an excellent business without necessarily representing an attractive investment at its current valuation.

He advised investors to test the valuation against three scenarios: a return to normal refining margins, delays to the planned expansion and a weaker naira.

Investors, he said, should avoid relying solely on headline fair-value estimates based on the most favourable assumptions.
