The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses has relaxed its longstanding policy on the medical use of blood, allowing individual members to decide whether to accept or donate four primary components of blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets.
The organisation announced the change on Friday, 18 September 2026, in an official statement issued from its world headquarters in Warwick, New York.

Under the revised position, the decision to accept any of the four components from another person’s blood during medical or surgical treatment is now a matter of personal conscience.
The same principle applies to members who wish to donate blood specifically to produce blood components or fractions for use in another person.

The organisation, however, made clear that the change does not amount to an end to its prohibition on whole-blood transfusions.
“The long-standing refusal of whole-blood transfusions on religious grounds, a core teaching based on the command to ‘abstain from blood’ (Acts 15:20), is unchanged,” the organisation said.
The release of a new Governing Body update and explanatory material on blood components accompanied the announcement.

What has changed?
For decades, Jehovah’s Witnesses have taught their members to reject transfusions of whole blood and its four principal components, red cells, white cells, plasma and platelets.
The organisation previously distinguished these components from smaller substances derived from blood, known as blood fractions.
Fractions such as albumin, immunoglobulins and certain clotting factors had already been treated as matters for individual conscience, meaning Witnesses could decide for themselves whether to accept them.
Jehovah’s Witnesses said the decision followed further consideration of the biblical principles governing blood and the limits of what their Governing Body should prescribe for individual members.
The organisation said its leaders do not regard treatments involving blood components as insignificant.
Instead, it said the absence of specific biblical instructions on the medical use of individual blood products means members should make their own decisions after prayerful consideration.
The new guidance also says members should not judge one another over those decisions, while congregations are not to become involved in an individual’s personal choice.
Whole blood remains prohibited
Despite the change, the organisation has retained its prohibition on whole-blood transfusion.
Jehovah’s Witnesses base their teaching primarily on biblical passages, including Genesis 9:4, Leviticus 17:10–14, and Acts 15:20, which they interpret as requiring Christians to “abstain from blood.”
The organisation teaches that blood represents life and is therefore sacred.
Its official medical information previously stated that the prohibition extended to whole blood as well as red cells, white cells, platelets and plasma.
The new position separates the question of whole blood from the four components.

While a member may now choose to accept one or more of the primary components, the organisation continues to say that whole-blood transfusion is not permitted.
The distinction is significant because blood components are commonly separated and used for different medical purposes.
Red blood cells, for example, can be used to increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. Platelets help control bleeding, while plasma contains proteins and other substances involved in blood clotting and other bodily functions. White blood cells play important roles in the body’s immune response.
A policy with a long history
The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ position on blood transfusion has been one of the organisation’s most distinctive and closely scrutinised religious teachings.
The movement, which emerged in the United States in the 19th century, has historically interpreted the biblical command to abstain from blood as applying not only to eating blood but also to medical transfusions.
The organisation has maintained that the issue is fundamentally religious rather than a rejection of modern medicine.
