INEC finally uploads NDC logo after court order

INEC had initially refused to register the NDC over its proposed logo before a federal high court ordered the electoral commission in September to upload the party's approved logo.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally uploaded the approved logo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The National Leader of the NDC, Seriake Dickson, disclosed this in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

Mr Dickson, a former governor and Bayelsa West Senator, said the upload of the approved logo was in compliance with the order of a federal high court and the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended.

“Our approved logo has now been uploaded, and candidates can print campaign materials and continue their consultations and campaigns with certainty,” he said.

The former governor appreciated the judiciary and INEC for the development.

“I thank the Nigerian judiciary and the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, and all members of the INEC team for complying with the court judgement,” he said.

The national leader also thanked the National Chairman of the NDC, Moses Cleopas, and the members of the party’s National Executive Committee for their hard work.

“We assure all Nigerians and our candidates that we are committed to seeing this through to the end.

“We are fighters, and we will fight until the end. We have resisted those who sought to use the judiciary against the party, and they have failed,” he stated.

All eyes on campaign

Mr Dickson stressed that the NDC members should now turn their attention to the task of ensuring that all the party’s candidates campaign and take their message freely to every part of Nigeria without intimidation.

“I call on all candidates to work with the party at all levels in the composition of their campaign teams as they are not independent candidates and avoid self-sabotage

“We must together join hands to fight against propaganda and misinformation from people who seek to undermine the party and our candidates and create division with childish rumours,” he said, stressing that the NDC was a product of vision, selfless dedication and commitment to democratic ideals.

“We are prepared to fight to uphold the democratic rights of Nigerians and to ensure that multi-party democracy thrives.”

Background

The dispute began after INEC initially refused to register the NDC over its proposed logo.

The NDC, which is fielding Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election, challenged the decision at the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State.

On 10 December 2025, the court ordered INEC to recognise and register the NDC as a political party.

INEC later complied with the judgement and announced the registration of the NDC in February.

However, the registration soon faced another legal challenge after the Peace Movement Party (PMP) complained that the logo used by the NDC was similar to one it had previously submitted to INEC.

The PMP also argued that it had an interest in the matter and should have been joined before the court ordered INEC to register the NDC.

In June, Isah Dashen, a judge of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, set aside the earlier judgement that had paved the way for the NDC’s registration.

The judge held that the PMP was a necessary party that should have been heard before the earlier judgment was delivered.

Consequently, the court restored the position that existed before the 10 December 2025 judgement and directed that the substantive dispute be heard afresh with INEC, the NDC and PMP as parties.

But the NDC rejected the ruling and appealed against it.

The party maintained that there was no order directing INEC to deregister the party.

In its ruling in September, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered INEC to approve and immediately upload the modified logo of the NDC for use in all elections.
