Nigerian footballers delivered a mix of goals, encouraging injury comebacks, and important minutes across Europe on Saturday, October 10, as club football resumed after the international break.
Tolu Arokodare continued his impressive start in the Netherlands with another goal for Ajax, Terem Moffi opened his Bundesliga account for Hamburg SV, and defender Chibuike Nwaiwu found the net in Trabzonspor’s emphatic win over Samsunspor.
Nathan Tella also returned to Bundesliga action for Bayer Leverkusen after recovering from a back problem, although compatriot Victor Boniface remained an unused substitute.
Here is how some of Nigeria’s leading players fared for their respective clubs.

Tolu Arokodare — Ajax
Tolu Arokodare continued his productive start to the Eredivisie season by scoring in Ajax’s 1-1 draw against NEC Nijmegen.
The Nigerian striker gave Ajax the lead in the seventh minute, rising to meet an opportunity in the penalty area and directing a header into the net to register his fourth league goal of the campaign.
Arokodare followed his finish with a thoughtful celebration, holding up a shirt belonging to injured Danish forward Kasper Dolberg, his Ajax teammate who is currently sidelined with a knee problem.

However, Ajax were unable to protect their advantage for long, with Tjaronn Chery converting a penalty in the 19th minute to restore parity for NEC.
The goal took Arokodare’s Eredivisie tally to four, alongside one assist, placing him among the league’s leading African scorers.
The Nigeria international joined Ajax in the summer after leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers and has continued to demonstrate the finishing ability that made him a prominent figure in Belgian football.
His reputation was strengthened during his time with Genk, where he finished as the Belgian Pro League’s leading scorer in the 2024/25 season with 21 goals.
Arokodare will now look to maintain that productivity as he continues his adaptation to Dutch football.
Terem Moffi — Hamburg SV
Terem Moffi opened his Bundesliga scoring account for Hamburg SV, with his first league goal for the club ultimately coming in an exhilarating 3-2 away win at Hoffenheim.
The Super Eagles striker came off the bench and drew Hamburg level at 2-2 in the 82nd minute, meeting a cross from Miro Muheim with a header that gave the hosts renewed hope of salvaging a result.
Hamburg, however, did more than just that, as Miro Muheim struck again in the 94th minute to claim all three points for the away side in an entertaining encounter.
With the win, Moffi’s goal represented an important personal milestone after fitness setbacks disrupted the early stages of his career in Germany.
The Super Eagle had made a brief appearance in Hamburg’s previous league outing, a 2-1 victory over FC Köln, as he worked his way back to full fitness following his summer move from French side Nice.
His preparations had been disrupted by injury, which affected his pre-season and ruled him out of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The 27-year-old will hope his breakthrough against Hoffenheim marks the beginning of a more consistent run of appearances as he competes for a regular place in Polzin’s attack.

Chibuike Nwaiwu, Paul Onuachu — Trabzonspor
Chibuike Nwaiwu scored his first goal of the season as Trabzonspor defeated Samsunspor 3-0 in the Turkish Super Lig.
The Nigerian centre-back struck in the 38th minute to double Trabzonspor’s advantage during a dominant first-half performance in the Black Sea derby at Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadyumu.
Ernest Muçi had opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a finish from inside the penalty area. Ten minutes later, Samsunspor goalkeeper Okan Kocuk failed to hold Muçi’s effort, allowing Nwaiwu to capitalise and find the net.
Franculino Djú added Trabzonspor’s third goal in the 40th minute, completing a commanding first-half display that left the hosts with too much to do after the break.
For Nwaiwu, the goal was a welcome attacking contribution from a defender whose primary responsibility is to provide stability at the back.
The result also gave the Nigeria international a disciplinary boost. Having collected yellow cards in previous matches against Başakşehir, Amed SK and Gençlerbirliği, Nwaiwu avoided another booking that would have triggered a suspension for Trabzonspor’s next league fixture against Beşiktaş on October 19.
He had been included in Nigeria’s matchday squads for the recent AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau but did not feature in either game.
His latest performance gives him another positive talking point as he seeks to establish himself more firmly in the Super Eagles setup.

Paul Onuachu replaced Mo Salah in the tie but couldn’t add to his or the team’s goal tally despite his best effort.
Nathan Tella, Victor Boniface — Bayer Leverkusen
Nathan Tella returned to Bundesliga action as Bayer Leverkusen edged Mainz 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller at the MEWA Arena.
The Nigeria international had missed Leverkusen’s first four league matches of the season while recovering from a back problem. Before Saturday’s encounter, his only appearance of the campaign had come in the DFB-Pokal victory over Wehen Wiesbaden, where he played the final 25 minutes of a 4-0 win.
The international break provided Tella with an opportunity to regain his fitness, and he was named in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga matchday squad for the first time this season.
With Leverkusen leading 4-2, the winger was introduced in place of Afonso Moreira with 15 minutes of normal time remaining.
Tella was unable to add to the scoreline, but his return to competitive action represents an encouraging development after his early-season absence.
Leverkusen had raced into a two-goal lead through Robert Andrich and Patrik Schick before Anthony Caci scored twice to bring Mainz level. Jarell Quansah and Moussa Diaby restored the visitors’ advantage after the break, while Benedict Hollerbach’s late goal was insufficient to prevent Mainz from suffering defeat.
Another Nigerian forward, Victor Boniface, remained on the Leverkusen bench throughout the encounter.
The striker’s absence from the action meant he could not add to his contribution for the former Bundesliga champions, who had to withstand a late push from the hosts to protect their advantage.
With Tella now back in contention after his injury layoff, competition for attacking positions at Leverkusen will be worth monitoring as the season progresses.
Ademola Lookman — Atlético Madrid
Ademola Lookman was also in action as Atlético Madrid claimed a 2-1 away victory over Alavés in La Liga.
The Super Eagles forward featured for Atlético before being substituted at half-time as Diego Simeone’s side secured the three points.
Although Lookman did not register a goal or assist in the match, his involvement offered another opportunity to build rhythm at club level following the international break.
For Nigeria, the priority will be for the forward to maintain his fitness and attacking sharpness as the Super Eagles prepare for their next competitive assignments.
Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey — Fulham
Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were among the Nigerian players involved in English football as Fulham suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.
The result extended a difficult spell for Fulham, who have been searching for greater consistency in the league. Iwobi’s creativity and versatility remain important to the London club as they look to turn their form around. Bassey’s defensive contribution is quite key for his side.

For the midfielder, the immediate challenge is to help Fulham convert their performances into points as the domestic campaign gathers momentum.
The bigger picture
Saturday offered encouraging signs for several Nigerian internationals. Arokodare continued to deliver in the Netherlands, Moffi got off the mark in Germany, and Nwaiwu added a goal to his defensive duties in Turkey. Tella’s return from injury was another positive development, even as Boniface waited for an opportunity from the bench.
The weekend also provided further evidence of the depth of Nigerian talent spread across Europe. For Eric Chelle and the Super Eagles coaching staff, the coming weeks will offer another chance to assess which players can carry their club form into Nigeria’s next international assignments.
