Nigeria vs Comoros Preview: Super Falcons eye third-round ticket in Olympic race

Although Nigeria remain firmly in control of the contest, Eguavoen’s side will need to combine defensive discipline with greater efficiency in front of goal to avoid giving Comoros any hope of mounting a comeback

The Super Falcons will look to finish the job against Comoros on Tuesday when both sides meet in the second leg of their second-round tie in the race to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Nigeria head into the return fixture with a two-goal advantage after securing a 2-0 victory in the first leg on Friday, 9 October, and will be aiming to book their place in the third round of the African qualifying series.

The encounter will take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 pm Nigerian time.

Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has the immediate task of guiding the 10-time African champions through the tie, with a meeting against Morocco awaiting the aggregate winners.

Michelle Alozie broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half of the first leg, before Uchenna Kanu doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 60th minute, giving the Super Falcons a valuable cushion ahead of Tuesday’s showdown.

Although Nigeria remain firmly in control of the contest, Eguavoen’s side will need to combine defensive discipline with greater efficiency in front of goal to avoid giving Comoros any hope of mounting a comeback.

Despite the first encounter being designated as Comoros’ home fixture, both legs of the qualifying tie are taking place in Nigeria.

Comoros do not have a CAF-approved stadium available to host the match, forcing the island nation to stage its nominal home leg on Nigerian soil. The return fixture will also be played at the Remo Stars Stadium, this time with Nigeria officially designated as the home team.

The arrangement means the Super Falcons have enjoyed the familiarity of playing in Nigeria across both encounters, although the first-leg victory still had to be earned on the pitch.

With the tie now returning to Ikenne, the Nigerians will hope to make the most of their advantage and complete qualification for the next round without unnecessary complications.

Alozie, Kanu deliver the goals, but Falcons must sharpen their attack

Nigeria secured the result they needed in the opening encounter, but their performance also highlighted areas that require improvement.

The Super Falcons created opportunities during the first half but struggled to convert their pressure into goals. They eventually found a breakthrough after the interval, with Alozie opening the scoring in the 48th minute before Kanu headed home from a Jennifer Echegini corner 12 minutes later.

The two goals provided Nigeria with a clean sheet and a commanding aggregate advantage, but the attacking wastefulness before the break was one of the talking points after the game.

Eguavoen acknowledged the team’s difficulties with the final ball and explained that the coaching staff addressed the issue during half-time.

Tuesday’s fixture offers the Super Falcons another opportunity to sharpen their attacking play while maintaining the defensive organisation that helped them keep Comoros at bay in the first leg.

Nigeria do not necessarily need another victory to progress. A draw or a win will be enough, while a one-goal defeat would also send them through on aggregate.

A two-goal loss would level the aggregate score and take the tie into the applicable extra-time and penalty-shootout procedures, while a defeat by three or more goals would eliminate the Super Falcons.

The challenge, therefore, is to remain composed, avoid defensive lapses and take advantage of the opportunities that come their way.

Can Comoros pull off a shock comeback against Nigeria?

Comoros face a difficult assignment as they attempt to overturn a two-goal deficit against one of Africa’s most successful women’s national teams.

Their progress to this stage was emphatic. Comoros swept aside Sudan 30-0 on aggregate in the first round, winning the opening leg 17-0 before completing the rout with a 13-0 victory in the return fixture.

Those results demonstrated their ability to score freely, but the Super Falcons represent a significantly tougher test, with greater international experience and quality across the pitch.

Comoros head coach Yusuf Abdullah previously described the opportunity to face Nigeria as an important experience for his players, pointing to the value of the encounter for the development of women’s football in the island nation.

However, Comoros must now find a way to breach Nigeria’s defence while preventing the Super Falcons from extending their aggregate lead. An early goal could increase the pressure on the hosts, but the visitors will need a disciplined performance at both ends of the pitch to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Eguavoen targets another step towards back-to-back Olympic appearances

Beyond securing progression, Tuesday’s match provides another important assessment of Eguavoen’s interim leadership as the Super Falcons pursue a second consecutive appearance at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

Nigeria returned to the Olympics at Paris 2024 after a 16-year absence and are now seeking to make it to Los Angeles 2028.

The squad features established internationals such as captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, Christy Ucheibe, Kanu, Toni Payne and Alozie, alongside younger players seeking to establish themselves in the senior team.

Joy Igbokwe made her senior international debut in the first leg, while Janet Akekoromowei and Suliat Abideen also earned their first competitive senior caps during the encounter.

Their opportunities reflect the importance of building depth within the squad as Nigeria navigate a demanding qualification campaign.

Eguavoen must now decide whether to retain the starting lineup that delivered Friday’s victory or make adjustments to keep his players fresh and improve the team’s attacking output.

Whatever changes he makes, the objective remains straightforward: secure progression without allowing Comoros to turn the contest into a tense finish.

Morocco looms as Super Falcons close in on Olympic Qualifying third round

The winner of the Nigeria-Comoros tie on aggregate will advance to the third round of the African qualifying competition, where Morocco await.

The North Africans have already progressed after Congo withdrew from their scheduled second-round encounter, leaving Nigeria and Comoros to settle the remaining place in the next stage.

The Super Falcons must first complete their assignment in Ikenne before shifting their attention to Morocco and the next hurdle in their Olympic qualification campaign.

Africa’s qualifying series features five knockout rounds, with only two teams ultimately earning places at the Los Angeles 2028 Women’s Football Tournament.

For Nigeria, Tuesday’s match is about more than protecting a two-goal lead. It is an opportunity to maintain their momentum, build confidence under Eguavoen and move one step closer to another appearance on the Olympic stage.

With a place in the third round within reach, the Super Falcons will expect to finish the job against Comoros and keep their Los Angeles 2028 ambitions firmly on track.
