I do not know exactly what awaits me after NYSC. It could begin with a job offer, the first serious steps towards building my own brand, further learning or simply another opportunity I cannot yet see… What I know is that I am willing to begin… I hope life after NYSC brings meaningful work, peace, growth and the courage to keep pursuing the person I am becoming.
Graduation day felt like the end of one long journey and the beginning of another. After years of lectures, examinations, assignments, friendships, and the occasional struggle to stay afloat, I finally walked away from the university campus with a certificate in hand, a heart full of relief and a quiet sense of accomplishment.
But in Nigeria, graduation does not necessarily mean the beginning of professional life. For many young graduates, there is one more significant transition before the real uncertainty begins: the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Established in 1973 to promote national unity and integration among young Nigerians, the NYSC scheme takes graduates beyond the familiar and places them in environments where they must learn to adapt, connect and contribute.
For me, the journey began with the usual process, registration, medical fitness tests, waiting for a call-up number and wondering where I would eventually be deployed. Then the call-up letter arrived.
Nasarawa State.
I had never visited Nasarawa before, and it was certainly not where I had imagined spending any part of my service year. My first reaction was disappointment. I had hoped to be deployed somewhere closer to home, somewhere familiar.
But I reminded myself that the orientation camp would last only three weeks. After that, I would return to the Federal Capital Territory, where I would spend the rest of my service year. With that thought, I packed my bags, said my prayers and answered the call to serve.
The reality of orientation camp was more intense than the stories I had heard.
There were early-morning drills, lectures, Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) sessions and the daily challenge of sharing space with hundreds of people I had never met. Yet, somewhere within the discomfort, something beautiful happened.
I reconnected with old schoolmates and made new friends.
There were conversations under the shade of trees, late-night discussions about dreams and fears, laughter over shared experiences and the quiet solidarity that comes from knowing that everyone around you is going through something similar.
Those 21 days taught me resilience in a way the classroom could not.
Camp also taught me that unfamiliar environments are not necessarily hostile ones. Sometimes, they simply require patience, openness and the willingness to adapt.
When the orientation exercise ended, I returned to the Federal Capital Territory with a better understanding of community, friendship and adaptability, lessons that, in many ways, represent some of the most valuable things the NYSC experience can offer.
Then came my Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
I was posted to Image Merchants Promotions Limited (IMPR), publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential, among other titles. From my first day at the organisation, I knew I had entered a different kind of environment.
The office was welcoming.
The Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Yushau A Shuaib, and members of staff treated us corps members with genuine openness. They guided us, shared their knowledge and gave us room to learn. Rather than making us feel like temporary visitors, they allowed us to become part of the team.
That experience became an important part of my service year.
I watched professionals approach their work with purpose and gradually began to understand the discipline behind effective communication. I learnt the importance of showing up consistently, being willing to learn and taking responsibility for whatever task is placed before you.
Perhaps more importantly, I experienced how a healthy workplace culture can influence a young person’s confidence.
Now, as my service year draws to a close, one question has become increasingly difficult to ignore: what next?
It is a simple question, but for many young Nigerians, it carries enormous weight. The truth is that I am still figuring it out.
There is no perfect blueprint for life after NYSC. Everyone seems to have an opinion about what should come next, employment, business, further education, marriage or some combination of them. But the reality is that every young person must eventually find a path that makes sense for their circumstances, aspirations and values.
I know that, someday, I want to build something of my own, a brand that carries my name, reflects my ideas and embodies the values I have developed over the years.
I want to create. I want to solve problems. I want to become financially independent and, if the opportunity comes, create jobs for others. But dreams also require resources.
Capital remains one of the major hurdles I think about when I consider entrepreneurship. Starting a business requires more than passion and good ideas. It requires funding, networks, knowledge, timing and the resilience to survive the inevitable setbacks.
For now, I am hoping for a job that will give me a foothold, a place where I can earn, learn, build experience and save towards the bigger dream.
It may not be the final destination, but it can be a beginning. Then there is the other question young people are often asked: marriage.
When will you settle down? When is the wedding? Is the next step a career or a family?
I do not have a fixed answer. What I know is that I want a life that offers peace and genuine happiness. I want work that has meaning and relationships that are sincere. I do not want to rush into major decisions simply because society expects me to tick certain boxes at a particular age.
I am learning to trust the process, and to trust God with the details. Looking back, I realise that NYSC gave me more than a compulsory year of national service. It stretched me beyond familiar territory and showed me that I could adapt. It introduced me to people who became part of my journey and placed me in a professional environment where I felt welcomed, challenged and guided.
Most importantly, it taught me that the future is rarely a straight road. Some steps are carefully planned. Others happen unexpectedly. Some doors open when we least expect them, while others remain closed until we are ready for what lies beyond them.
As my service year comes to an end, I leave with gratitude for the experiences, the people and the lessons.
