Super Eagles’ Onyemaechi, Otele face fresh challenge as Olympiacos, Basel sack coaches

Super Eagles duo Bruno Onyemaechi and Philip Otele are set for a new chapter at club level after Olympiacos and FC Basel both parted ways with their respective head coaches on Wednesday.

The coaching changes mean the Nigerian internationals will have to adapt to new ideas and systems as they look to establish themselves under new leadership at their respective clubs.

Olympiacos announced the termination of their collaboration with José Luis Mendilibar, bringing an end to the Spaniard’s two-year spell in charge of the Greek giants.

The 65-year-old enjoyed a successful tenure with Olympiacos, most notably guiding the club to UEFA Conference League glory in 2024.

Mendilibar still had a contract that was due to run until next year, but Olympiacos opted to bring their relationship to an early end.

The decision comes despite the club making a positive start to the new Greek league campaign, picking up seven points from their opening three matches.

However, Olympiacos suffered disappointment in Europe earlier this summer after being eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers by NEC Nijmegen, losing the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Onyemaechi had become a regular presence during Mendilibar’s time at the club, making 44 appearances across all competitions under the Spanish coach and recording two goal involvements.

The Nigerian defender will now have to adapt to another tactical approach as Olympiacos begin the search for Mendilibar’s successor.

Meanwhile, Otele is also facing a change in the dugout at FC Basel after the Swiss champions dismissed head coach Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Lichtsteiner’s departure comes after seven Super League matches and two consecutive home defeats, prompting Basel to make a change early in the season.

Assistant coach Luigi Nocentini has been placed in temporary charge while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

For Otele, the managerial change represents another adjustment after he featured in eight matches during Lichtsteiner’s time in the Basel dugout.

The Nigerian winger will now have to impress another coach as he seeks to establish himself and secure a more consistent role within the Basel squad.

While the circumstances surrounding the two managerial departures differ, both Onyemaechi and Otele now face a similar challenge: convincing new coaches of their value and adapting quickly to whatever tactical demands the changes bring.

For Onyemaechi, the task will be to build on the 44 appearances he made under Mendilibar, while Otele will hope to use the arrival of a new coach as an opportunity to make a stronger impression at Basel.

With the season still in its early stages, the coaching changes could yet prove to be a turning point for both Super Eagles players.
