Her finish was not only technically impressive but also arrived at a crucial moment. England needed a response after Nigeria’s first-half advantage, but Akekoromowei’s early second-half strike effectively killed off any hopes of an immediate comeback.
Akekoromowei has also shown a willingness to test opposing goalkeepers. She entered the knockout stage among the tournament’s leading players for goal attempts, with 18 attempts and four on target, and that attacking instinct could be decisive against Colombia.
The South Americans have shown considerable defensive patience throughout the tournament, which means Nigeria may not have many clear opportunities.
