Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have won the WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, after defeating Togo 4-0 in Sunday’s final.
The victory completed a perfect campaign for the Flamingos, who won all five of their matches, scored 17 goals and conceded only two.

Captain Harmony Chidi scored twice from the penalty spot in the first half before Oluebube Umejiaku and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi added goals in the 67th and 90th minutes, respectively.
The Flamingos had earlier defeated the Niger Republic 5-0, Ghana 4-2, Burkina Faso 2-0 and hosts Côte d’Ivoire 2-0 on their way to the final.

The title provides the team with a strong boost ahead of next month’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, commended the players and officials for their performance and expressed confidence in their prospects at the World Cup.
“The Flamingos have done very well and made the nation proud. I have faith in the players that they are not done yet. I have confidence in the team to go to Morocco and achieve great things at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup that is starting next month,” Mr Ikpeme said.

He also commended the WAFU-B leadership for organising the tournament as part of the teams’ preparations for the global competition.

“It is no mean feat to win five matches out of five in a tournament. That is a distinction. The NFF is appreciative of the WAFU-B headquarters for organising the tournament as a premium preparatory event for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, and I believe the Flamingos have benefitted immensely ahead of the global competition,” he said.
The Flamingos, bronze medallists at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, are expected to return to Nigeria on Tuesday.
